Terraria Zoologist Guide

Introduction

Terraria Zoologist Guide - Zoologist

Welcome to our Terraria Zoologist Guide! The Zoologist is an animal-loving NPC who arrived with the 1.4 “Journey’s End” update. Her shop is filled with critter-themed items, mounts, vanity sets, and pets. Unlike most vendors, her wares unlock progressively as you fill out the Bestiary. She appears early in your world’s progression and brings a lighthearted, collectible-focused dimension to the town.

How to Unlock the Zoologist

To have the Zoologist move in, you need two conditions met: a valid house and at least 10% completion of the Bestiary. The house must meet the usual standards—enclosed with walls, a light source, furniture, and enough interior space to qualify. You can check suitability using the housing query tool from the housing interface. Once the room is confirmed, the next step is Bestiary progress. Filling out roughly 53 to 54 entries, which comes from encountering enemies, NPCs, bosses, and critters, will mark the 10% milestone. This data is world-specific and tracked visually within the Bestiary menu. When both requirements are fulfilled, the Zoologist may appear the following in-game morning.

What the Zoologist Sells

Terraria Zoologist Guide - Squirrel Hook

The Zoologist’s inventory changes over time, growing as you expand your Bestiary and encountering certain world events or moon phases. She begins by selling essentials like the Guide to Critter Companionship and the Squirrel Hook. As your Bestiary fills up, more tools become available—like the Leather Whip or various pet licenses, which summon the Town Cat, Dog, or Bunny depending on your progress. Each pet has specific Bestiary thresholds before the corresponding license becomes purchasable.

She also offers themed vanity items tied to moon phases. For example, fox gear shows up during the Third Quarter moon, dog items appear during Full Moon and Waning Gibbous phases, and other sets like lizard or bunny are tied to other lunar patterns. Once the Bestiary reaches full completion, she sells the Universal Pylon—a powerful item that allows teleportation without any NPC or biome restrictions. Along the way, she unlocks a wide range of items: mounts, kites, saplings, decorative items, and tools, depending on in-game progression milestones.

In terms of biome pylons, she can sell one if she’s housed in a biome she likes, such as the Forest, and her happiness level is high enough to reduce shop prices.

Zoologist’s Preferences (Happiness)

Terraria Zoologist Guide - Witch Doctor

Happiness affects her pricing. She prefers living in the Forest and is happiest when nearby the Witch Doctor, Princess, or her younger brother, the Golfer. On the other hand, she dislikes living in the Desert and has strained relationships with the Angler and Arms Dealer—the latter of whom she outright hates. Careful housing decisions can lead to significant discounts in her shop.

Additional Information

In combat, the Zoologist defends herself with claw swipes that resemble the Terragrim’s attack style. During full moons and Blood Moons, she undergoes a transformation into a werefox, complete with altered dialogue and appearance, though her map icon remains unchanged. Her fox-like features are explained in-game as the result of a cursed animal bite, humorously referencing the “arrow to the knee” meme from Skyrim.

Terraria Zoologist Guide - Shimmer

When exposed to Shimmer, she takes on a visually distinct Shimmered form, which is reversible by submerging her again. While she can’t wear a party hat due to her ears, she maintains a notable presence in your town, even holding a 5-star rarity in the Bestiary despite being easy to unlock.

Conclusion

The Zoologist stands out as a collectible-focused NPC who rewards exploration and discovery. She’s easy to acquire early on and becomes more valuable as your world expands. For players aiming to collect mounts, pets, and aesthetic items, she’s an essential figure. Housing her in the Forest alongside the Witch Doctor and Golfer ensures she stays content and offers the best prices. With time and effort, her shop grows to offer even late-game treasures like the Universal Pylon, making her a lasting and endearing part of any Terraria town.
