Introduction to the Astral Team
Marvel Strike Force Astral is specifically designed to dominate the Battleworld game mode, leveraging its strengths to excel in various competitive environments. It performs exceptionally well in Alliance War, benefiting greatly from Awakened abilities that enhance its effectiveness. In the Cosmic Crucible, the team demonstrates outstanding attributes, making it a formidable force to contend with. Known for its high mitigation and sustain, this team is difficult to defeat, able to endure prolonged battles while maintaining consistent performance. It delivers substantial damage through both active and passive abilities, contributing significantly to overall damage output. The team also possesses strong control capabilities, including the ability to flip positive effects, apply various debuffs, and clear Trauma, which adds to its versatility and tactical advantage. The composition consists of five characters: three new additions and two reworked characters, Doctor Strange and Moondragon. This lineup includes two Mutants, two Mystics, and one Skill character, creating a balanced and synergistic team. Additionally, the team benefits from Drain mechanics and passive Ability Energy regeneration, enhancing its sustain throughout battles. A notable increase in stats has been achieved due to a “stats reset,” boosting the team’s overall power. However, the team’s full potential is largely dependent on having Awakened abilities active, as its performance may be less impressive without them. The temporary pause of the Battleworld game mode has affected the team’s primary competitive environment, but it remains a strong contender in other modes.

Astral Team Members
For optimal performance in Marvel Strike Force, the recommended left-to-right placement of the roster is as follows: Doctor Strange, Shadow King (who serves as the Legendary Leader), Moondragon, Ancient One, and Emma Frost (X-Men). This arrangement maximizes synergy between characters, ensuring effective use of their abilities and team dynamics during battles.
Core Team Mechanics & Synergies
In Marvel Strike Force, Shadow King’s “Possessed” mechanic activates at the start of battle, granting him the Possessed status. While Possessed, he attacks the most injured enemy at the end of each turn or when a non-Summoned ally uses their Ultimate (or Special in Battleworld). These attacks deal Piercing damage, apply Drain, steal Max Health, fill his Speed Bar, and clear negative effects. Shadow King cannot gain Trauma or Stun while Possessed. If he is eliminated, the Possessed status transfers to a random Astral ally, and he regains Possessed upon revival. With the T4 Passive, his damage while Possessed increases significantly, dealing 300% Piercing damage.
Ancient One generates 1 Ability Energy for herself and all Astral allies whenever she or an Astral ally lands a critical hit, enabling more frequent Ultimate use. Emma Frost (X-Men) provides healing and defensive support by applying Regeneration and Barrier to the most injured ally with her Basic ability, granting Defense Up and Barrier on spawn, and clearing negative effects while applying Barrier when below 50% health. Doctor Strange offers consistent healing by restoring 5% of Max Health to himself and all allies each turn and heals further when positive effects are applied to enemies. His Ultimate can revive two random dead allies with 65% health. Moondragon enhances sustain by granting +30% Drain to the entire Astral team, applying Barrier to herself and all allies when attacked in Battleworld or War, and healing all allies for 30% of her Max Health with her Ultimate.
This team excels at mind control and debuff manipulation. Emma Frost (X-Men), Shadow King, and Moondragon can mind-control enemies with the highest damage to attack the primary target. Ancient One and Doctor Strange both flip all positive effects on enemies into negative effects using their Specials. Shadow King’s Ultimate copies and clears all positive effects from enemies to himself, while Emma Frost copies and clears negative effects (except Stun) from allies to herself and then transfers them to the primary target. Shadow King also spreads negative effects from the primary target to adjacent enemies with his Special and clears Trauma from the entire team with his Ultimate.
Speed manipulation and control are key strengths of this roster. Ancient One’s Ultimate reduces the speed bar of the most injured enemy by 100% and applies Stun. Moondragon’s Special reduces enemy speed bars by 50% and applies Slow. Doctor Strange fills the speed bar of the ally with the least speed by 15% each turn. Emma Frost prevents non-Mythic enemies from increasing their speed except through positive effects. Ancient One prevents enemies from gaining Taunt upon spawn in Battleworld and War modes, applies Counter to the team, and Doctor Strange gains Deflect whenever a positive effect is applied to an enemy.
Doctor Strange’s “Charged” mechanic activates by gaining one Charged stack whenever he or an ally is attacked. When he reaches 5 or more Charged stacks at the end of his turn and no Wong is currently summoned, he summons Wong. The summoned Wong enters battle with 2 Deathproof stacks, Safeguard for 2 turns, and an 80% Speed Bar in Battleworld and War. Wong is a classic Protector, equipped with Taunt and counter abilities, and benefits from +300% Focus, making him a strong defensive presence for the team.
Optimal Builds
In Marvel Strike Force, ISO-8 class assignments play a crucial role in optimizing each character’s performance. Shadow King, Ancient One, and Moondragon are best suited as Raiders, which enhances their effectiveness with multi-target abilities, although some players consider Moondragon as a Striker. Doctor Strange is primarily assigned as a Healer to improve mitigation but can also be used as a Raider or Striker for offensive capabilities and specific fights like against Knull, with Fortifier as an option to boost survivability. Emma Frost (X-Men) is generally recommended as a Striker to maximize follow-up attacks, though some opt for Skirmisher to enhance offense and apply vulnerabilities, or Fortifier to increase durability. Overall, having more Raiders on the team boosts Ability Energy generation, and a Healer is essential in Battleworld for clearing Vulnerable effects.
For Tier 4 (T4) ability upgrades, certain abilities are essential to unlock and enhance for peak team performance. For Doctor Strange, his Ultimate and Passive are essential for reviving allies, generating energy, and enhancing Wong summons, with Special and Basic abilities recommended for additional damage and utility. Shadow King’s Passive, Special, Ultimate, and Basic are all essential for maximizing damage, trauma application, mind control, and spreading negative effects. Moondragon’s Ultimate, Special, and Passive are essential for healing, damage, speed reduction, and barrier application, with the Basic ability recommended for additional damage and mind control. Ancient One’s Passive and Ultimate abilities are essential for energy generation, taunt prevention, stunning enemies, and applying Safeguard, while the Special is valuable for damage and team buffs. Emma Frost’s Passive, Special, and Ultimate are essential for clearing Disrupted effects, applying barriers, and copying or clearing negative effects, with the Basic ability recommended to improve healing and defenses.
Regarding Red Stars and Diamonds, it is recommended to have 7 Red Stars for Ancient One and Emma Frost (X-Men), obtainable from Elite Red Star Orbs when these characters are featured. Doctor Strange and Moondragon can be farmed to 7 Red Stars through Incursion stages and Milestone Orbs. Shadow King’s Red Stars are collected via Trials and Dark Promotion Credits. A minimum of 2 Diamonds is recommended for all Astral members to enhance their stats, although Doctor Strange may not require Diamonds if built as a Fortifier. Emma Frost benefits more from survivability enhancements rather than damage increases from Diamonds, as her kit scales with enemy stats.
Team Placement & Turn Order
In Marvel Strike Force, the recommended placement of the team from left to right is Doctor Strange, Shadow King, Moondragon, Ancient One, and Emma Frost (X-Men). This positioning supports optimal synergy and ability use during battles. The ideal turn order for this roster begins with Emma Frost (X-Men), followed by Shadow King, Ancient One, Moondragon, and finally Doctor Strange. This sequence maximizes control, damage, and support effects throughout the fight.

Utility & Game Modes
In Marvel Strike Force, this team’s primary utility lies in its dominance of the Battleworld game mode, for which it was originally designed, benefiting from additional bonuses in that environment. It also excels in Alliance War when equipped with Awakened abilities, gaining a significant 30% boost to primary stats on defense when the full team is used. Beyond these modes, the team is a formidable force in Cosmic Crucible due to its compact composition and strong attributes, making it a viable budget defense option for Stage 1 or Stage 4 and potentially very effective when paired with the Phoenix Force. Each character also holds substantial individual value outside of the team, with Emma Frost (X-Men) offering particular utility in Battleworld by contributing to Boss Knull’s Max Health reduction. The impact of Awakened abilities greatly enhances the team’s performance in War and, while initially tied to Battleworld, their relevance shifted to War rewards following the temporary pause of Battleworld.
Strengths, Weaknesses & Combat Tips
In Marvel Strike Force, this team’s strengths include exceptional sustainability through healing, regeneration, barriers, and Drain mechanics, allowing it to endure prolonged battles. It delivers impressive damage output both actively and passively, while maintaining excellent battlefield control by applying debuffs, flipping positive effects into negative, and manipulating speed bars. The team also has the unique ability to consistently remove all negative effects, including Trauma, enhancing its resilience. Recent stat resets have boosted its overall stats, placing it above many other teams in power.
However, the team’s performance significantly diminishes without Awakened abilities, limiting its effectiveness. Initially, its use was very restricted to Battleworld and Alliance Wars when Awakened. Despite its capabilities, the team has been described as underwhelming overall, with some considering it one of the weakest legendary teams in recent years. Shadow King, in particular, has been viewed as a disappointment when compared to other legendary characters like Old Man Logan.
For combat, it is generally effective for team members to start battles by using their Special abilities, followed by Ultimates on the second turn to maximize impact. Frequent use of Ultimate abilities is important to trigger the Possessed effect for sustained passive damage. Building the team with more Raiders increases critical hit frequency, which in turn generates more Ability Energy and enables more Ultimate ability use. It is worth noting that Ancient One’s Ultimate can be somewhat RNG dependent, as it targets the most injured enemy after the rebound chain, which can affect its consistency.
Counters Against Astral & Countering Other Teams
In Marvel Strike Force, several teams and strategies effectively counter the Astral team. Undying combined with Ares, starting with Scarlet Witch Zombie’s Basic, poses a strong challenge. Undying paired with the Phoenix Force duo, excluding Scarlet Witch Zombie, is also effective. Mercs For Money with Apocalypse, as well as a lineup of Cabal, Kang, and Apocalypse focusing on Emma Frost followed by Shadow King, can disrupt Astral’s flow. Other successful counters include Quasar, Apocalypse, Red Hulk, Void Knight, and Brawn working together, and Vigilante teams that stun Doctor Strange with Peggy while targeting Shadow King. Teams led by Liberty or Absolute A-Force often focus first on Doctor Strange, then Shadow King. Mighty Avengers and combinations of Knull with Undying counter Astral and Mephisto effectively. Mephisto teamed with Nightstalker or Orchis counters Astral and Cosmic Ghost Rider with an emphasis on Shadow King. A recent affordable Astral War counter includes Omega Red with Phoenix Force, supported by X-23, Nightcrawler, Robbie Reyes, and Iron Man (Zombie).
Conversely, the Astral team itself acts as a powerful counter against certain teams. It can effectively handle slightly weaker Absolute A-Force squads, provided there is a strong punch-down strategy. Astral is a hard counter to many teams including various Asgardian compositions (with heroes such as Vahl, Beta Ray Bill, Thor, and Valkyrie), Astonishing X-Men, Bifrost, Black Order, multiple Cabal variants, Darkhold and Dormhold teams, Death Seed, Dormammu with Heroes for Hire or Hero Asgardian teams, Eternals, Gamma, Hive-Mind, Illuminati with Captain Britain, Immortal X-Men, Infinity Watch, Knowhere, Masters of Evil, Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, New Warriors, Nightstalker, Orchis, Out Of Time (especially with Ancient One’s level 6 Passive), P.E.G.A.S.U.S., Spider-Society, Starjammer, Superior Six, Secret Defenders, Underworld, War Dog, Weapon X, and X-Treme X-Men. This extensive counter list highlights Astral’s versatility and strength against a broad range of team compositions.
