Introduction to Wittle Defender Positioning Guide
Understanding unit placement in Wittle Defender is one of the most overlooked yet crucial aspects of battle strategy. In many stages, the order you deploy your units directly determines where they stand on the battlefield—and that positioning can decide whether they survive or fall quickly. Certain bosses even have slash-type attacks that strike two positions at once, making placement awareness even more important.
This guide breaks down how deployment order affects battlefield positioning, how bosses typically target their attacks, and what patterns you need to watch out for. By knowing where your units will stand and which spots are most vulnerable, you can plan your lineup smarter and minimize unnecessary losses.
Deployment Order and Positions

When you deploy your team one by one, each unit is automatically assigned a fixed position on the battlefield:
1st Unit – Middle – Positioned in the center of the battlefield.
2nd Unit – Bottom-Right – Placed on the bottom-right side.
3rd Unit – Bottom-Left – Placed on the bottom-left side.
4th Unit – Top-Right – Placed on the top-right side.
5th Unit – Top-Left – Placed on the top-left side.
Do note that we’ve only tested this in main chapter stage and challenge chapter so keep that in mind!
Boss Slash Attack Patterns

Certain bosses use slash-type attacks that can hit two units at the same time. These attacks usually follow a straight-line path, meaning that pairs of positions are struck together rather than individually.
From testing in main chapter stages and challenge chapters (where heroes are deployed one at a time), the following patterns have been observed:
- Common Slash Patterns:
- 5 & 3 (Top-Left + Bottom-Left)
- 4 & 2 (Top-Right + Bottom-Right)
These two combinations appear most frequently, but some attacks go Top left + Top right as seen in the GIF when the boss uses its slash attack but the most common one is the one listed above.
- Targeting Behavior:
The boss generally aims at the closest unit available when deciding where to strike. Because of this, slashes often line up with one of the pairs listed above. - Rare Variation:
On rare occasions, instead of hitting the backline pairs, the boss targets the 1st unit in the Middle. This does not happen often but is important to note, as it changes which units end up taking damage. - Stage Context:
This targeting pattern has so far only been confirmed in main chapter stages and challenge chapters where you deploy units one at a time. Other modes or deployments have not been tested.
Strategy & Tips for Safer Deployment
- Avoid doubling squishies in pairs (2&4 or 3&5): These pairs are common slash targets. Try to spread your damage dealers across safer slots.
- Save Support/Healers for Top-Left (5th slot): This position is relatively safe but still vulnerable in the 5&3 slash pattern. Keep a healer here.
- Use sacrificial or utility units on risky slots: If you know a boss prefers a certain slash, put less essential units there instead of your core carries.
- Adapt based on stage mechanics: Some stages may slightly alter targeting behavior, so always pay attention to attack patterns and know the bosses that appear.
- Consider non boss and normal waves: While these information focuses on bosses pattern, don’t overlook considering how the waves appear and where enemies appear. Adapt and make sure to consider where you’re gonna position, especially if you’ve lost the stage before. – We’re making a list of stages which displays which enemies will appear per stage so stay tuned in Theria Games!
❓ What is the Wittle Defender Positioning Guide?
The Wittle Defender Positioning Guide explains how unit placement is determined by deployment order and how bosses use slash-type attacks that can hit two positions at once.
❓ How is unit positioning decided in Wittle Defender?
Unit placement is based on deployment order: 1st goes to the Middle, 2nd Bottom-Right, 3rd Bottom-Left, 4th Top-Right, and 5th Top-Left.
❓ Which units are usually hit by boss slash attacks in Wittle Defender?
Slash attacks most often strike either 5 & 3 (Top-Left + Bottom-Left) or 4 & 2 (Top-Right + Bottom-Right).
❓ Can the middle unit be hit by slash attacks in Wittle Defender?
Yes. While most slashes target the side pairs, on rare occasions the 1st unit in the Middle gets targeted instead of the backline.
❓ Where has the Wittle Defender Positioning Guide been tested?
The targeting patterns listed here have been tested only in main chapter stages and challenge chapters where units are deployed one at a time.
