Introduction

The Dwarf is a fascinating and unique character found in Stardew Valley, residing in a cave in the eastern section of the Mines. As one of the few non-human villagers in the game, the Dwarf stands out due to their mysterious background and reclusive nature. Initially, players cannot access the Dwarf’s location because a large rock blocks the path to the cave. To gain entry, players must use a steel pickaxe or a cherry bomb to break through the rock. Once inside, players encounter the Dwarf, but there is a catch: the Dwarf speaks in Dwarvish, a language that is completely unreadable at first.
To understand the Dwarf’s speech, players must complete an important task from the Stardew Valley Dwarf Guide, which involves collecting four Dwarvish scrolls from within the Mines. These scrolls are scattered around the Mines and are often hidden in treasure chests or dropped by enemies. After gathering all four scrolls, players must donate them to the museum, where Gunther, the museum curator, will reward them with the Dwarvish Translation Guide. This guide allows players to decode the Dwarf’s language and engage with them in meaningful ways.
Once players can understand Dwarvish, the relationship with the Dwarf becomes more engaging and offers several advantages. The Dwarf operates a shop that sells rare items, some of which are not found elsewhere in the game, such as bombs, rare seeds, and other valuable goods. Interacting with the Dwarf’s shop becomes a key part of the player’s ability to progress and acquire essential items that can assist in their farming, mining, and exploration. Additionally, forming a friendship with the Dwarf can unlock unique dialogues, deepen the player’s understanding of the game’s lore, and open up special quests.
These quests provide valuable rewards and insight into the history and culture of the Dwarf, enriching the overall experience of the game. Building a strong friendship with the Dwarf, much like with other villagers in Stardew Valley, is important for completing the game’s social goals and contributes to the player’s sense of connection to the world. Whether it’s gaining access to exclusive items or simply enjoying the benefits of friendship, the Dwarf’s role in Stardew Valley is essential, making the quest to understand Dwarvish a rewarding challenge for players.
Initial Encounter

To meet the Dwarf in Stardew Valley, you need to venture into the Mines, which are located just east of Linus’s tent. As you approach the Mines entrance, you will notice a small path on your right that is blocked by a large rock. This rock must be removed before you can continue further into the Mines and interact with the Dwarf. There are two main ways to break the rock and clear the path. The first method involves using a steel pickaxe, which requires a few upgrades.
To obtain a steel pickaxe, you must first upgrade your basic pickaxe to a copper pickaxe. This can be done by taking your regular pickaxe, along with 5 copper bars and 2000g, to Clint, the blacksmith in Pelican Town. Once the copper pickaxe is ready, you will need to upgrade it again to a steel pickaxe. This second upgrade requires 5 iron bars and 5000g. The process can take several days, but once your steel pickaxe is ready, you can use it to break the rock blocking the path and reach the Dwarf.
Alternatively, if you want a faster way to clear the rock, you can use a cherry bomb. To craft a cherry bomb, you need 4 copper ore and 1 piece of coal. Additionally, you will need to have reached at least mining level one to unlock the recipe for the cherry bomb. This method can be much quicker since you don’t have to wait for upgrades, and you can gather the required materials in the Mines or by mining copper nodes on your farm. Once the cherry bomb is crafted, you can use it to blow up the rock and clear the path to the Dwarf’s location.
After clearing the rock, you can follow the newly opened path to the Dwarf’s cave and begin your interaction. The Dwarf is a reclusive character, and gaining access to them is one of the more unique challenges in Stardew Valley. Engaging with the Dwarf opens up a range of opportunities, including understanding the Dwarf’s speech, purchasing rare items, and forming a meaningful friendship that will enhance your overall experience in the game.
Language Barrier
When you first meet the Dwarf in Stardew Valley, they will speak in their native language, Dwarvish, which is not understandable at the start. To communicate with the Dwarf, you will need to acquire the Dwarvish Translation Guide. This guide is unlocked by donating four Dwarf Scrolls to the Museum. These scrolls contain the secrets of the Dwarf language and are essential for progressing in your interaction with the Dwarf. To obtain the Dwarf Scrolls, you must explore the Mines, where they can be found by breaking rocks and defeating monsters. While the scrolls are rare, they are not difficult to come by as you continue to mine and fight enemies.
The Dwarf Scrolls are divided into four types, each with varying drop rates and locations. Dwarf Scroll I can be found by tilling the soil on any floor in the Mines or Skull Cavern, with a 16% chance. It can also be dropped by monsters such as Bats, Bugs, Cave Flies, Duggies, Green Slimes, Grubs, Rock Crabs, and Stone Golems, with a 5% chance. Dwarf Scroll II is found by tilling on floors 1 to 40 in the Mines, with a 1% chance, and can be dropped by Ghosts, Frost Bats, Dust Sprites, and Blue Slimes, with a 5% chance.
Dwarf Scroll III has a 1.5% chance of dropping from Blue Slimes and can also drop from other enemies like Slimes (red, purple, copper, iron, and tiger), Lava Bats, Lava Crabs, Squid Kids, Shadow Brutes, Shadow Shamans, Metal Heads, Spiders, and Blue Squids, with a 0.5% chance. Finally, Dwarf Scroll IV is the rarest, with a 1% chance of dropping from monsters like Serpents, Skeletons, Wilderness Golems, Carbon Ghosts, Iridium Bats, Iridium Crabs, and Haunted Skulls. It can also be found by tilling the soil above floor 80 in the Mines, with a 2% chance.
Once you have collected all four Dwarf Scrolls and donated them to the Museum, Gunther will reward you with the Dwarvish Translation Guide. With this guide in your possession, you will be able to understand Dwarvish, which will allow you to communicate with the Dwarf, purchase items from their shop, and build a friendship. The guide will be stored in your wallet, making it easy to access whenever you want to engage with the Dwarf.
Friendship
In Stardew Valley, you can befriend the Dwarf just like any other NPC in the valley. The Dwarf, however, does not have a daily schedule to follow, as they are always located in the Mines. This means there is no need to track where the Dwarf will be at certain times of the day. Like other villagers, the Dwarf has friendship heart events, and you can even invite them to the movie theater once you’ve built the theater.
Building a relationship with the Dwarf is primarily done through gift-giving. You can give the Dwarf up to two gifts per week, plus one additional gift on their birthday, which will increase or decrease your friendship depending on their feelings toward the gift. If you do not understand Dwarvish, your gifts will not affect your friendship, so acquiring the Dwarvish Translation Guide is essential for progressing in your relationship with the Dwarf.
It is important to consider the Dwarf’s preferences before giving a gift. If the Dwarf loves a gift, it will raise your relationship by 80 points, while liked gifts provide 45 points, and neutral gifts give 20 points. Giving a disliked gift will lower your relationship by 20 points, and giving a hated gift will cause you to lose 40 points. The Dwarf’s birthday is on Summer 22nd, and giving them a gift on this day will have eight times the effect of a regular gift and trigger a unique dialogue.
If you give the Dwarf a loved, liked, or neutral gift, they will say, “Oh! I’ve read about this tradition… it’s a ‘birthday gift’, isn’t it? Hmm, very interesting…” If you give a disliked or hated gift, their response will be, “Oh! I’ve read about this tradition… it’s a ‘birthday gift’, isn’t it? So, is it part of the tradition to give out garbage like this?”
The Dwarf has several loved gifts, including Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Jade, Lava Eel, Lemon Stone, Omni Geode, Ruby, Stardrop Tea, and Topaz. These items are all well received and will help boost your relationship. Additionally, the Dwarf likes all universal liked gifts, such as Cave Carrots and Quartz, as well as all Artifacts. As for neutral gifts, the Dwarf is indifferent to all fruits (except fruit tree fruit and Salmonberry), Solar Essence, Void Essence, and all milk.
When it comes to disliked gifts, the Dwarf will not appreciate items such as Dinosaur Eggs (considered Artifacts for gifting), eggs, milk, Chanterelle, Common Mushroom, Daffodil, Dandelion, Ginger, Hazelnut, Holly, Leek, Magma Cap, Morel, Purple Mushroom, Salmonberry, Snow Yam, Wild Horseradish, or Winter Root. Hated gifts include all universal hated items, except for Artifacts, Cave Carrot, Lemon Stone, Omni Geode, Solar Essence, and Void Essence.
The Dwarf can also be invited to the movies, and they will love all films. If you are feeling generous and want to bring a snack, the Dwarf enjoys Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy. They also like Star Cookies, Salmon Burgers, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Sour Slimes, Cotton Candy, and Jawbreakers. Any other snacks you bring to the movie will be disliked by the Dwarf. By consistently giving thoughtful gifts and inviting the Dwarf to the movies, you can quickly build a strong friendship with this unique character.
Heart Events
The Dwarf in Stardew Valley has one heart event, which becomes accessible once you reach 50 friendship points with them. To trigger the event, you must first obtain a Stardrop from Krobus and then enter the Sewers. Upon entering the Sewers, you will encounter an intense situation where the Dwarf and Krobus are engaged in a heated argument.
The Dwarf accuses Krobus and the other shadow people of being responsible for the tragic death of their family during the Elemental Wars, an event that has left the Dwarf with a deep sense of anger and grief. The emotional confrontation continues to escalate, with the Dwarf blaming Krobus for the horrors of the past, until the Wizard arrives on the scene to intervene and stop the fighting.
The Wizard, seeing the tension between the two, demands that they make peace with one another. To ensure that they honor this promise, the Wizard casts a “seal of promise” upon them, magically binding them to their word. The Dwarf, although initially resistant, consents to the Wizard’s intervention and agrees to the peace agreement. They promise to stay away from the Sewers moving forward, marking a turning point in their relationship with Krobus. In return, Krobus once again apologizes for the past, explaining that he harbors no personal resentment toward the Dwarf and that the conflict was a result of a misunderstanding rooted in their shared history.
This heart event is one of the most emotional and spooky in Stardew Valley, as it delves into the Dwarf’s troubled past and their long-standing tension with Krobus. The event reveals a deeper layer of the Dwarf’s character, highlighting their pain and the lingering effects of the Elemental Wars. It also provides an interesting dynamic between the Dwarf and Krobus, showing that despite their differences, they both are capable of understanding and reconciling with one another.
The Dwarf’s Shop
The Dwarf operates a shop located in the eastern cave inside the Mines, offering a selection of unique and valuable items primarily for mining. The items available are useful for players who frequently venture into the Mines, Skull Cavern, or other dangerous areas. Among the items the Dwarf sells are several tools and resources to assist in mining, health recovery, and enhancing gameplay.
The shop includes a variety of products such as the Big Stone Chest recipe, which costs 5,000g and allows you to craft a larger chest for storage. Another item, the Bomb, is available for 1,000g and generates an explosion, but it can be cheaper to buy the ingredients to craft it at the Blacksmith for 750g, provided you have a Mining level of 6. The Cherry Bomb, a smaller explosive, can be bought for 450g, and like the Bomb, the ingredients can also be purchased at a lower price elsewhere.
The Dwarf also offers useful consumables like the Life Elixir, which fully restores your health and costs 2,000g, and the Miner’s Treat for 1,000g, which restores 125 energy, 56 health, and provides a temporary mining and magnetism buff. Additionally, the Dwarf sells the Dwarvish Safety Manual for 4,000g, reducing bomb damage to you by 25%. For those looking to avoid hostile monsters, the Oil of Garlic for 3,000g will keep weaker monsters away, preventing spawns in the Mines and Skull Cavern, except on dungeon floors. Another interesting item is Rarecrow #6, a collectible scarecrow that costs 2,500g and helps protect your crops from crows.
Other items include decorative pieces like the Stone Cairn, which is priced at 200g, and the Weathered Floor Recipe, costing 500g, which allows you to craft a weathered wooden floor for your farm. The Dwarf’s shop provides a variety of useful and collectible items that can enhance your mining experience and offer some unique rewards, whether for decoration, practicality, or convenience in the Mines.
The Dwarf’s Schedule
The Dwarf has a permanent residence in the Mines and can always be found in the same spot, located on the right side of the Mines entrance. Unlike other villagers who have a daily schedule, the Dwarf does not move from their position and never leaves the Mines. As a result, there is no need to track their whereabouts or plan around a specific schedule to interact with them. The Dwarf remains in this location throughout the game, allowing players to easily find them whenever they wish to shop or engage in conversation.
Trivia
The Dwarf’s gender is listed as “undefined” in the game’s data. To access the Dwarf, players must remove the large rock blocking the entrance inside the Mines, which can be broken using a Cherry Bomb or a stronger explosive.
The game does not indicate this when attempting to break it with a low-level Pickaxe. Over time, updates have made several changes to the Dwarf’s shop inventory and gift preferences. The Stone Cairn was added to the shop in version 1.3.27, and version 1.4 introduced fixes for neutral gift dialogue while also making Cave Carrots a liked gift. In version 1.4.4, Lemon Stone became a loved gift, and version 1.5 expanded the Dwarf’s liked gifts to include all artifacts, not just those related to dwarves.
Version 1.6 introduced custom gift reactions and dialogue, increased bomb prices, and added the Dwarvish Safety Manual and Big Stone Chest recipe to the shop. Additionally, the Dwarf now loves Lava Eel, is neutral towards all milk, and the 50 Friendship Points heart event can no longer trigger on Fridays.
Relationships
The Dwarf is sometimes suspicious of the player, questioning whether they might be a spy for the shadow people due to the long-standing conflict between the two races. This war, which lasted for over a thousand years, resulted in the near extinction of the Dwarf race, leaving behind only relics and remnants of their once-thriving civilization. The Dwarf holds a strong dislike for Krobus, blaming his ancestors for the downfall of the dwarves and the loss of their people.
Despite this hostility, the Dwarf seems to respect the Wizard, possibly due to his knowledge of magic and history. At 50 friendship points, a heart event occurs in which the player finds the Dwarf and Krobus engaged in a heated fight in the Sewers. The argument escalates until the Wizard intervenes, stopping the fight and insisting they put an end to their feud. To ensure peace, he casts a Seal of Promise, binding them to their word and preventing further conflict between them.
