Calico Egg Merchant

First, you’ll encounter the Calico Egg Merchant—a shadowy figure who runs a shop located at the center of the three obelisks. This vendor is a regular feature of the festival, offering a variety of goods including decorations, hats, food, bombs, and even mystery boxes. Rather than using gold, all purchases must be made with calico eggs.

Villagers Shops

Unlike other festivals in the game, the residents of Pelican Town operate their own shops during this event. Just south of the bus stop, you’ll find two large shop displays on either side. Throughout the festival, various villagers will take turns running these stalls, each offering unique items that reflect their individual tastes and personalities.

Chef

The chef operates a food stall just northwest of the bus, where you can select various ingredients to create a customized meal. The resulting dish will have different effects based on the ingredients you choose. After a short animation, your character will automatically consume the meal, instantly applying its effects. You can get unlimited meals for free, but keep in mind that each new meal’s effect will overwrite the previous one. For maximum benefit, it’s best to wait until the current effect wears off before eating another.

Emily’s Box

Just south of the villager-run shops, you’ll find Emily’s box. Stepping inside will instantly dress your character in a brand-new outfit that’s “perfectly suited” to you. This wardrobe change is completely free, but you can only use the box once per day. Don’t worry—your original outfit will be safely stored in your inventory.

Free Cactus

At the southernmost edge of the festival, you’ll find a peculiar-looking individual running a unique shop. They offer you a free cactus decoration, which is randomly generated—meaning you can collect a variety of different versions. However, you’re limited to receiving just one per festival.

Races

Just south of the bus, you’ll quickly notice a set of tracks where some rather unusual races take place. While you can’t control the racers, you can place bets on who you think will win by speaking to the Race Announcer—look for the person in the blue outfit on the eastern side of the map. If your chosen racer wins, you’ll earn 20 calico eggs. Just make sure to place your bet before the race begins. Multiple races occur throughout each of the three festival days, giving you plenty of chances to rack up rewards. For those looking to tip the odds in their favor, there’s a shady figure near the left side of the Oasis shop. This Suspicious Guy lets you secretly pick one contestant who is guaranteed to lose—for a price of 1 calico egg. While not exactly honest, it can make earning those 20 calico eggs a bit easier.

Skull Cavern Challenges

The Desert Festival also features combat challenges for adventurous players. North of the bus, you’ll find Gil and Marlon running a stall that introduces you to the Skull Cavern challenges. Each day, you can choose between two different quests—one focused on monster slaying and the other on reaching a specific level in the cavern. You can only attempt one challenge per day, but completing it will reward you with calico eggs. In addition to the main combat challenges, the Desert Festival also features the Egg Rating system—a score you build while completing Skull Cavern tasks. You earn one egg point for every 5 levels you descend, and also by activating Calico Statues—cat-shaped statues that randomly grant buffs or debuffs during your run. These statues can provide helpful effects like extra calico eggs, speed boosts, or weaker enemies, but they can also make the cavern more dangerous by increasing enemy spawns or damage. Once you’re done, speak to Gil to submit your Egg Rating. Like the daily cavern challenge, you can only submit your score once per day—so it’s worth pushing for the highest rating possible. High scores can reward you with calico eggs, Triple Shot Espresso, Gil’s Hat, and more—the better your score, the greater the reward. You can also find calico egg nodes inside the cavern that yield 3 calico eggs each when mined. And don’t worry—you don’t need to have a Skull Key to participate, though the challenges can still be quite tough.

Medical Station

Since it’s still possible to be defeated in the Skull Cavern during the festival, a medical station is available to the left of the Calico Egg Merchant. If you get knocked out, you’ll wake up there. Fortunately, you won’t lose any energy, gold, or items—but you’ll be left with only 10 health points and will drop some of the calico eggs you were carrying. It’s a safety net, but one that comes with a cost.

Fishing Challenges

To the left of Gil and Marlon’s shop, you’ll find a desert pond where Willy has set up a challenge board. Each day, he offers a new fishing quest—often requiring you to catch specific desert fish, such as Sandfish. Complete the task and speak to Willy to earn calico eggs as a reward. Like other festival activities, you can only take on one fishing challenge per day.

Scholar

In the northeastern corner of the festival, you’ll find a mysterious figure who will quiz you in exchange for calico eggs. The questions cover a range of Stardew Valley topics, including NPCs, seasons, crops, and fish. You’ll be asked four questions in total, each one more challenging than the last. If you answer all correctly, you’ll earn a generous reward of 50 calico eggs. The Scholar, as he’s known, only rewards you once per festival—but if you don’t succeed, you’re welcome to try again the next day.

Travelling Cart and the Desert Trader

The Travelling Merchant, who normally appears in the Cindersap Forest, also makes an appearance at the Desert Festival in Stardew Valley 1.6. Her shop opens at 12:00 PM and features the usual selection of rare and random items. You’ll also find the Desert Trader offering their standard range of exotic goods. While Sandy’s shop remains open during the festival, you won’t be able to make any purchases from her until the event concludes.

Shrouded Figure

These villagers may offer exclusive items or simply take part in the festival activities. On Spring 16, another set of villagers is in attendance, including Clint, Demetrius, Haley, Leo, Linus, Maru, Pam, Penny, and Robin. Players can even pay a suspicious man to potentially rig the races, making one of the contestants lose. However, races will not run unless the player is in the main festival area.

Willy’s Fishing Quests offer a fun daily challenge. On Spring 15, players are tasked with catching three sandfish, on Spring 16, they must catch a scorpion carp, and on Spring 17, they are asked to find Willy’s golden bobber in a fishing treasure chest.

The Scholar presents players with four random questions each day. Answering all questions correctly rewards players with 50 Calico Eggs. If the player answers incorrectly, the questionnaire closes for the day. One of the questions asks players to recall their total number of steps taken, with the correct answer being the numerically middle value.

Emily’s Outfit Services allows players to receive a new outfit once per day. The player’s original clothes are placed into their inventory. When Emily is running a villager shop, Sandy takes over the outfit service. There are 61 total makeover outfits, and gender-neutral outfits can unlock special items like the Dark Ballcap, Joja Cap, and Laurel Wreath Crown.

The Chef at the festival offers a variety of main and side dishes that provide buffs, though these buffs do not stack with dishes of the same type from the chef. However, they do stack with other foods and drinks, and any dish will restore the player to maximum health and energy.
