Chapter 1: Getting to Keep 11

Table of Contents

After starting on Evony, your first priority is to reach Keep level 11 (k11). This is because at k11 you unlock the War Hall, which shall allow you to join rallies with an alliance. Rallies are like collective group attacks, and to grow quickly you can join rallies to attack bosses which drop lots of great loot – but more on that in the next chapter, this will shall focus on how to get there!

General Information

In Evony there are four troop types: cav/mounted, archer/ranged, ground, and siege. Cav, Arch, and Ground act like rock, paper, scissors – and siege is *typically* the overall best, although expensive. Cav beats ground (rock beats scissors), ground beats arch (scissors beats paper), and arch beats cav (paper beats rock).

Evony has four main resource types – Food, Wood, Stone, and Ore. These are used in building, upgrading, and training troops. You can gain more resources by completing events, buying them with gems, farming them on the world map, killing bosses, and loads of other ways.

Getting to K11

If this is your first time playing Evony, I recommend following the tutorial (to bypass the tutorial, when a pop up starts click anywhere else on the screen 10 times). The tutorial will teach you about building/upgrading buildings, and expose you to the world map, as well as the puzzles that are in the game. If throughout this guide you come across terminology you don’t understand, check out our dictionary of Evony words here. If this is your first time playing, I suggest you read through this entire section first before continuing playing – it will help prevent you from making any costly or time consuming mistakes!

At the beginning of Evony you will come across a screen that lets you pick your culture, for a guide on cultures click here. I recommend you pick Europe as your first culture for the constructions buffs it provides.

You can scroll across the menu to see all the buffs available (buffs means is an advantage, they are both flat (numerical) and % based – for more info check out the guide here).

The tutorial will show you how to build and upgrade buildings, complete puzzles (for a full guide on puzzles, check out here), and research, amongst a bunch of other basics! The tutorial will take you very quickly to keep six. Please note as you read this guide a lot of information is non-sequential (does not happen in an exact order), so please read this full page of the guide first before doing anything in-game.

Once you reach k6, one of your requirements for k7 is Conscription Level 1. This is a type of research, and research can be found in the Academy. Conscription is found under the Military tab, and it uses gold and speed ups to research. Usually building requirements require other buildings, but sometimes they will require additional tasks to be completed such as research.

As you continue following the tutorial, which will take you eventually to keep 11, you will notice the game starts to slow down due to the increase in time it takes to build and upgrade buildings, research, or train troops etc. For ways to speed this process up, check out the non-sequential information below.

That is all the sequential information for this stage in the guide, it is good to get to k11 by figuring out the game yourself as it will help you to learn the very basics – and its hard to go hugely wrong at this point in the game. My closing piece of advice is just focus on keep level 11, don’t worry about other buildings and troops unless required for unlocking k11.

Non-Sequential Information:

  • After 24 hours of playing you will receive a General, “Spartacus”. This general is pretty bad and I do not recommend you spend any resources upgrading him. You will get better generals shortly.
  • Do not buy any non-historic generals from the tavern, historic generals are purple / gold generals with special abilities. When recruiting in the tavern, historic gens will have a small crown appear above their coloured circle icon. To learn more about generals, check out this guide here.

  • For a list of the best generals click on the links: cav, archer, ground, siege, defense, boss, debuff, farming, duty, & assistant. Generally speaking, don’t buy purple gens – there are only very few purple historic generals that are worth buying. Don’t worry if that sounds confusing, remember to refer to the Dictionary, and you will learn as you go!
  • Events are vital to playing Evony – make sure you keep checking what events are on, and if you have scored any rewards! New players on new servers get access to a lot of growth events, so keep an eye out for these, they will help you grow quickly.
  • As you progress your keep level, remember to keep opening your growth packages in your inventory (unlocked with each new keep level). These will supply you with resources, speed ups, and gems.
  • If you are on a new server, go to the Shrine (building in the middle) and click on the glowing scroll. This will take you to an area where you can unlock more rewards. Click on each section to learn about the rewards available and the tasks needed to be completed to unlock them. Remember, a lot of these tasks only unlock after a certain amount of time.
  • Don’t worry about spending gems in the early days, typically a server (unless you are coining hard) will be somewhat peaceful the first couple of days due to a lack of anyone having an army. Use these gems to quickly upgrade to k11. Gems can be bought, or obtained freely, for help with this, check out our guide here.
  • Complete quests in order to get rewards. This can include resources and speed ups to help you advance. Quests are located on the left hand side of the screen.
  • For an additional 500 gems, join an alliance! I recommend going to “…” > Ranking > Alliance Power Ranking, and applying to the best alliances here. Hopefully someone will let you in!
