The buff limits that you can get on each equipment depend on the rarity of the equipment. For example, on King’s Gear the maximum is 15%, whereas the maximum on Dragon gear is 20%. The flat refines change depending on the type of buff and rarity of equipment.

I do not recommend refining anything below Ares/Archaemenidae gear for PVP. It costs a lot of gold, refining stones, and gems to get good buffs and this simply isn’t worth it below k33

The Refining Process

The most straightforward way to refine gear is to assign it to a general, then click Refine, then click Refine again.

Here you will see a screen which shows you the possibility to refine. The cost of refining changes depending on the quality of gear you are looking to refine. Unless you are setting up for a t1 trap keep you should look to use %-based refines. You will want to plan in advance what buffs you are looking for. For example with a bow, you may want to add further ranged attack. You want to get as close to the upper range of the refining equipment as possible (shown on the far right as you refine). I personally aim for within 5% of the maximum, if not even less if I have gems to burn.

Evony recently introduced a new system which makes the refining process a bit easier for new players. You should aim to have the buffs you want coloured red, or better yet, yellow. This shows they are close to the upper limit on offer. Once you have managed to get one of these buffs (limit of 4 buffs per item), you can press the lock button on the left of your current buffs. This means that when you continue to refine this buff will remain the same, but it will cost gems. For one buff locked it costs 1500 gems, for two it costs 3000 gems, and for four it costs 5000 gems. Refining can quickly eat up your gems, gold, and refine stones – this is why I recommend not to refine PVP gear before you hit Ares / Archaemenidae gear.

These buffs will transform your general, and your PVP. Good luck!
