Matsunaga Hisahide’s Backstory

In Japan’s Sengoku period, Matsunaga Hisahide rose like a dark star. He reached the height of power, yet left a name stained by betrayal and fire. Later generations remembered him alongside Hōjō Sōun and Saitō Dōsan as one of the Three Ambitious Warlords of the Sengoku period. He was also a master of the tea ceremony.

Born from humble origins, he rose through cunning to become daimyō of Yamato Province. Ashikaga Yoshiteru’s blood stained the shogun’s residence, and the shogunate’s authority crumbled in his hands. The Great Buddha Hall of Tōdai-ji burned, reducing the sacred site to scorched earth and branding his name with infamy. Yet he was more than a villain. He stood beside Sen no Rikyū as a master of the tea ceremony. In his hands rested the Hiragumo kettle and the Tsukumo Nasu tea caddy, rare treasures of beauty in an age of fire.

Twice he submitted to Oda Nobunaga, and twice he rebelled. When Shigisan Castle was surrounded, legend says he packed gunpowder into the Hiragumo kettle and died with the treasure he loved most. Better to destroy it himself than let it fall into enemy hands.

He slew his lord, burned temples, and changed allegiance without hesitation. Yet he also promoted the tea ceremony, protected famed treasures, and survived by wit and ruthless skill. Merit and sin were woven together in him, like the age itself. In his wake remained a burned castle, a famed kettle, and an echo that still lingers.
