Introduction
Welcome to the ultimate guide on traps, where we will take a deep dive into their mechanics to discover the best defense possible. Many players believe traps are a waste of resources, however the maths tells us otherwise…
Understanding the Mechanics
Starting off nice and simple – there are four types of traps, each counter different troop types:
- Stones > Ranged Troops
- Fire Arrow > Siege Machines
- Abatis > Mounted Troops
- Trap > Ground Troops
There is a formula for trap activation:
Traps Activated = Number of Traps * (0.01 + Trap Triggering Buff / 100)
Fully maxed out research will give you a total trap triggering rate of 2%, if you have Leo III with maxed Ambush, this will give you a further 0.2%, for a total of 2.2%.
The next key information regarding traps is the activation rate. A trap will only activate if the following equation is True:
Number of Traps > 1000 / (1 + Trap Triggering Buff / 100)
This means that at a 1% rate (no research, no gen) , you must have 1,000 traps. With a 2% buff you must have at least 500 traps for them to activate.
Out of the traps, only the amount of your trigger rate will be used. 1% trigger rate of 1,000 traps is 10 traps actually being activated, or 2% trigger rate of 1,000 traps is 20 traps actually being activated.
The activation rate is calculated per round within the battle. Each battle is made up of 20 rounds. This means that if you have a 2% rate, and 500 traps, after the first round no more traps are activated as this equation is False:
Number of Traps > 1000 / (1 + Trap Triggering Buff / 100)
If you have a 2% rate, and 1,000 traps, they will activate for all 20 rounds, as the equation remains True. This results in a total of 332 traps activating across the course of the battle, with a remainder of 668 traps.
When a trap is activated – it does not mean that they are ‘used up’ and die. The number of traps that die, equal the number of enemy troops killed. So even if 100 traps are used, but only 4 troops are killed, only 4 traps will die.
If you are F2P, to medium coiner, I recommend building T1 traps as they are very economical and the pay off is great. If you are a big coiner, then I recommend building T8 traps to get the most bang for your buck.
Conclusion & Thanks
In conclusion, whether you spend a little or a lot on Evony, traps are extremely useful and effective. I recommend implementing these strategies to begin to pvp more effectively.
I would like to say a massive thanks to Derrick Defies, BadStoryDan, and the rest of the Evony TKR Game Mechanics community – they are the reason we have such in depth data. They have done a great job!
Pair this with our other guides and you will be sure to smash the competition – good luck!
