Research Factory Overview
The Research Factory is used to produce important materials and items needed for equipment crafting, research, and Council of State progression.
It can produce Materials, which are used to craft equipment in the Forge and Wonder, as well as Research Stones, which are required for higher-level Academy research. It can also produce Historic Medals, which are used for position promotions in the Council of State.
Upgrading the Research Factory allows you to produce higher-level Materials and increases the amount of Research Stones you can obtain.
The Research Factory becomes available at Keep Level 21.
To continue upgrading the Research Factory, you must also raise the level of your Hospital.
Menu (Availability during upgrade, Unlock conditions)
The Produce Materials menu is used to create equipment crafting materials.
The Produce Research Stones menu allows you to generate Research Stones, but this feature cannot be used while the Research Factory itself is being upgraded.
The Craft Medal menu is used to produce Historic Medals for Council of State promotions.
The Duty feature unlocks at Research Factory Level 32, allowing you to assign a Duty Officer for additional bonuses.
Milestones
At Level 21, the Research Factory can produce Level 3 Materials.
At Level 32, the Duty Officer feature becomes available.
At Level 36, you can begin producing Level 4 Materials, while Level 41 unlocks the production of Level 5 Materials.
Upgrade requirements (resources, etc.)
Upgrading the Research Factory requires increasing amounts of resources and construction time as its level rises.
The displayed Construction Time depends on your current Construction Speed bonuses, so the actual upgrade time may vary between players.
You can check your Construction Speed under the Administration section of the Monarch Details screen.

Production of materials
The Research Factory allows you to choose which type of material you want to produce.
You can queue up to 8 materials for production at a time. Producing materials does not cost resources, but each item takes more than 2 hours to complete.
You can spend Gems to finish production instantly, but the cost is very high and generally not worth it.
Which materials should I make?
In most cases, you should simply produce whichever materials you currently need the most.
However, as you approach Keep Level 33, it is a good idea to continuously produce Dragon Scale.
Dragon Scale is heavily used when crafting Achaemenidae Equipment, and you may need a large amount if you plan to equip multiple Subordinate City Mayors with full Achaemenidae sets for stronger enemy debuffs.
Production of Research Stones
What’s the point of making Research Stones?
Research Stone production is usually not a major priority during the early and mid-game.
Up to around Keep Level 33, most players will have enough Research Stones to continue progressing through Academy research without needing to produce large quantities manually.
Demand begins to increase as you progress further into high-level research, particularly the Military Advance category.
By this stage, you may also be able to defeat Hard Vikings consistently. Viking rallies can provide a substantial number of Research Stones, so producing them in the Research Factory is generally most useful when those rewards are no longer enough to cover your research needs.
Production Cost
Research Stones can be produced using both Gold and Gems.
- 100 Research Stones: 500,000 Gold + 8,000 Gems
- 500 Research Stones: 2,500,000 Gold + 40,000 Gems
- 1,000 Research Stones: 5,000,000 Gold + 80,000 Gems
- 1,500 Research Stones: 7,500,000 Gold + 120,000 Gems
Unlike some other systems in Evony, the cost per Research Stone remains consistent regardless of how many you produce at once.
How to increase the daily production limit
You can increase your daily Research Stone production limit by completing the quests shown on the Research Stone Production screen, upgrading the Research Factory, and assigning a Duty Officer.
How to increase the production speed
The main way to increase Research Stone production speed is by assigning a Duty Officer to the Research Factory.
Regular research speed bonuses do not affect Research Stone production. This means bonuses such as the Intellect Crown, Academy Duty Officer effects, and other Research Speed buffs will not reduce production time.
Despite the name, Research Stone production is treated as a separate system from normal Academy research.
Craft Medals
Historic Medals are required for position promotions in the Council of State.
Crafting Historic Medals requires certain General Tokens, General Fragments, and Gems.
The number of Historic Medals you receive depends heavily on the type of General used. Older Generals typically provide very few medals, while relatively newer Generals provide significantly more.
In general, Old Generals are mostly those commonly available through the Tavern, while Relatively Newer Generals are usually harder to obtain and often come from events or other sources.
Historic Medals crafting capacity per Token & per Fragment
Tokens:
- Old General: 30
- Relatively Newer General: 6,000
- Epic Historic General (Premium): 7,200
- Epic Historic General (Glory): 7,200
Fragments:
- Old General: 1
- Relatively Newer General: 200
- Epic Historic General (Premium): 240
Because of the large difference in medal output, it is generally better to save and collect tokens or fragments from newer Generals when your goal is Historic Medal production.
Recommended Generals
The following relatively newer Generals can provide high amounts of Historic Medals and may be obtainable through the Tavern, Relics, or recurring events.
Confirmed as of January 16, 2026.
Tavern
For Ranged Troops, useful options include Alfred the Great, Thutmose III, Henry V, Edward III, and Charles XII.
For Mounted Troops, options include George A. Custer, Mordred, and Poligenus.
For Ground Troops, Soult, Turenne, and Aurelian can be used.
For Siege Troops, options include Napoleon, Zucca, and John Churchill.
For Defense, Shajar al-Durr and George Dewey are available options.
Other
Relics can provide Epic Historic General Fragment (Premium), Yi Sun-sin, and Elektra.
The Trial of Knights Event can provide Generals such as Marcus Agrippa, Louis IX, Lu Xun, and Pyrrhus.
The Wheel of Fortune can provide Raged King.
Duty Officer
The Research Factory Duty Officer feature unlocks at Research Factory Level 32.
Assigning a Duty Officer increases both the Research Stone production limit and production speed.
Any general who meets the Duty Officer requirements can be assigned if you only want the standard bonus.
For stronger Research Factory bonuses, Margaret of Valois is one of the best choices, followed by Stephen the Great. Their skills provide additional benefits related to Research Factory performance and research progression.
A general must meet the required level, star, and attribute requirements before they can be assigned as a Duty Officer.
