Henry IV’s Backstory
Henry IV, born into the House of Bourbon, was raised in the small mountain kingdom of Navarre. Surrounded by the might of France and Spain, the kingdom’s humility and practicality shaped him into a ruler of the people.
Amid France’s bloody religious wars, Henry of Navarre rose as the Huguenot leader. In the brutal “War of the Three Henrys”, he triumphed over his rivals and claimed the French crown. Yet the realm he inherited was torn apart by faith and hatred.
To restore peace, Henry converted to Catholicism and issued the Edict of Nantes, making Catholicism the state faith while protecting Huguenot rights. With the help of Duke Sully, he rebuilt the treasury, restored royal authority, and ended decades of chaos.
Assassinated by a fanatic, Henry IV is still remembered as “the Good King” who sought unity over division. His wisdom and compassion healed a broken France and secured its rebirth.
