Demetrius I’s Backstory

From the ruins of Alexander’s empire, Demetrius I rose like a siege tower in motion amid the fires of the Hellenistic world. Remembered as “The Besieger”, he was the Antigonid dynasty’s most brilliant commander, his name flashing like lightning across the Aegean sky.

Born in a Macedonian war camp, he came of age amid the clashing blades of the Wars of the Diadochi. Still young, he led his army into Greece, freed Athens from tyranny, and was hailed as “the Savior”. He then crushed Ptolemy’s fleet at the Battle of Salamis, securing Antigonid supremacy at sea. At Rhodes, he built Helepolis, a nine-story siege tower clad in iron and propelled by over ten thousand. The city held, but the siege earned him the immortal name “The Besieger”. The Rhodians later cast the Colossus of Rhodes from the tower’s remains—the weapon of the defeated became the victors’ monument, the ultimate tribute to his foes.

At Ipsus, his father, Antigonus I, fell. Demetrius retreated to Greece with his surviving forces and reclaimed the Macedonian throne years later. Though eventually driven from the throne, his name was already etched among the stars of the Hellenistic age. He spent his life pursuing Alexander’s shadow; though the crown eluded him, the thunder of his siege towers shook the Hellenistic world.

The Besieger built the tallest siege tower the world had ever seen; his weapon was recast into one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; and his name became an eternal landmark for builders of fortifications and besiegers alike. Among the boundless stars of the Hellenistic age, Demetrius I’s light was never dimmed by defeat.
