Evony Probus Backstory
Amid the twilight of the Crisis of the Third Century, Probus rose like a blade forged in the Illyrian highlands. Remembered as one of the finest Illyrian Emperors, his name carried across the Rhine and Danube like a flash of war.
Born in the camps of Pannonia, he won renown under Gallienus and Aurelian, rising through the legions by merit. When the eastern army placed the imperial purple upon him, he secured Rome’s allegiance with the patience of a veteran commander, avoiding needless bloodshed.
As emperor, Probus spent his reign defending the frontiers. In Gaul, he crushed the Germanic tribes, drove back the Franks and Vandals, and reclaimed more than seventy lost cities. Rebellions in the East and the Balkans fell in turn, and Rome’s eagles stood firm once more along the borders.
Yet he was more than a soldier. He restored canals, encouraged vineyards, and set veterans to rebuilding the land. Preparing for war against Persia, he was killed in a soldiers’ mutiny—but from the Rhine to the Nile, he had preserved Rome’s honor with an iron hand.
